IMAP. Every user with gmail, yahoo etc has an imap account. You can have your app sync stuff into its own folders there and use the credentials to send alerts too. And the contact list is there. But those folders as personal user storage… Gold. Store text, store attachments, mine the data. The only app I know that exploits it: Notes by Apple
