Netscape.com was a place for this kind of stuff in the heart of the browser wars against Microsoft. Netscape Server, Mail, and so many other early highlights. I think it’s classy to say to the user — “hey I wanted to write you a personal letter and totally disrupt the business-as-usual over here”. Better than email. (Amazon rarely spams announcements like this.)
