Yep another $500 so MBA at least is funded.

On that page at least Jukay Hsu, Ron Williams or possibly Soo Kim I would be comfortable with as our advocate. I know the former two and will email them. More soon. We are trying to sandblast a lot of time and resentment from alumni who loved the activity and were virtually all treated badly. So, I am working on it.

Hi Amol,

I want to contact the SHSAA and make a connection with the appropriate person to handle your group’s contributions to the debate team ongoing.  I’ve attached a list of names from the alumni association website.  Are any of them people you know or were debaters? If so, let me know.  If not, I will approach the president of the organization and get the right individual to help us.  Also, let’s meet soon, in person, to make this effort more formal and so that you understand that it is a sincere effort to set up funding for the team in perpetuity. Please know that everyone is super appreciative of your efforts and that I will be making a presentation on fundraising at the team parent meeting on Tuesday and will mention your efforts.

BTW, the is the other $500 on the way for sponsoring MBA?  I’ve promised it and don’t want to lose credibility so early in our drive!

My best,

Alta

Hey Alta,

I’m going to keep working on re-activating the alumni that I’m friendly with. Let’s not set a date for a fundraiser yet. Please keep feeding me news and I’ll use it to keep in touch.

When I feel we have a few interested alumni circled up, I’m going to invest the time to meet you and a few other folks live (which you may find odd I haven’t done yet) so I can tell people unequivocally that we have a framework I believe in. Remember, I have been involved in the policy team as an alumnus for 14 years and took some significant steps in the past only to see them washed away.

Hmm. When is Blake again? Is it policy only?

The underlying issue is durability and while you are interested now your son  be a graduate next year if I am not mistaken. If we don’t have a partner at shsaa or administration to shepherd it forward this is just a project to help one or two teams do well this year.

Remember in my world Julie and what she offers to do is too changeable to consider success.

About a dinner – not sure that’s the move. I have been reaching out to key folks and they are going to be slow to activate. A deadline in the form of "we are getting together please join us" could work. I’d rather their money goes to the team so something cheap may be best. At this point nobody has the passion to commit $1000s. We are going to get a few hundred per person max.

Hi Amol,

Since my last message, I now have confirmation from Julie that Blake has been added to the calendar, based on the fund raising projections we have now, including yours.  Can we interest people in helping to sponsor Blake?

As far as the alumni association is concerned, we certainly can get the name of the person who handles the team account and make that connection so that this keeps going.  I don’t think we can necessarily have him at a dinner, however, because he would want to fundraise for the entire alumni association and fundraising for debate only might be at cross purposes. That having been said, the SHSAA has been gracious about acting as a vehicle for our funding to be processed.   How about a dinner at a nice restaurant?  I’m an architect and have designed a couple of small but critically acclaimed places and know the chefs well .  Maybe we I can work a good deal with them and have a low key benefit dinner or power breakfast or a few of them or something like that. We need to step on the gas because Blake is a 1st semester tournament and is costly because of air fare and hotels for everybody attending.

Has to be someone from SHSAA I would say — someone who will represent our interests in the longer run

Julie won’t be at the reception if that’s best.  She normally doesn’t come to any parent sponsored events. No big deal.  I don’t know about a school official but maybe you know of an alum? I know a very old Stuy alum but he wasn’t a debater.  Any suggestions?

Can you get someone who is an shsaa lifer or a senior school official?

I’m afraid nobody will take confidence from Julie’s statements alone. It is better she isn’t involved with the alumni.

Hi,

Thanks for the update.  I can host a fundraising reception in my loft if you wish.  We’re in SoHo. It can be a parents’ and alum event.  No big deal. Let’s do it!

Hi alta

Another $500 heading your way. But also working on the other contacts who are far more skeptical than me.

I think I can arrange a small dinner or reception with 5-10 people who will do 500-1000 each but Julie should not be there. Ideally a senior shsaa or AP from the school. Possible?

Hi Amol,

So the season is off to a good start.  Our top policy team broke into the out rounds at Georgetown despite one of the debaters having a bad cold.  Big Bronx is next.  Lots of momentum.  Now talk of trying to get to Blake, money permitting. The new principal has met with a group of parents and with Ms. Sheinman and is following up with Sheinman on what can be done from the school’s side on helping with funding.  The parents, principal and Sheinman are working as a cohesive team with the goal of getting the kids out to as many quality tournaments as possible.  Julie asked how you’re doing with your fund raising.  She’s in it to win it with us! Got a check for $500 from Roy Bahat.  Thanks – I assume one of your guys.  He actually addressed the check to me instead of the SHSAA, but I’ve taken care of writing another.  Please tell the others to address the checks to the SHSAA.

I look forward to hearing from you.

My best,

Alta
