Summify, News.me, and others send you a daily email that highlights key links/reading from the day.
And another one which is cute is Timehop, which send you your social production of a year ago. Which is refreshing.
In the real time world, perspective, relevance, aggregation are useful and apparently email aint a bad way to see it (I suppose starting pages and portals and feeds are not ideal for this)
